You can build the most beautiful site with the best products in the world but if no one is able to find your site out of the millions of websites on the internet, you are as good as being non-existent. What you need is to attract people to your website by either getting free traffic or to pay for it through advertising. Any internet marketer should use a combination of both strategies. But I will just concentrate on a very powerful free traffic pulling technique available called search engine optimization or simply SEO technology.
For any person to search for information online, for most of the time it would be though a search engine like Google, Yahoo!, or MSN. In fact, expect more than 50% of your potential customers to find you this way. The only problem is that by statistic, surfers only bother to look at the top 10-20 search results out of hundred of thousands of websites that turn up on each search. Therefore it is definitely essential to get ranked amongst the top 20 in order to even have any chances of being clicked.
So how the search engine decide how to rank websites is this: Search engines have ’spiders’ that crawl the World Wide Web and index the millions of web pages based on a complicated mathematical formula the measures the website content to the searched keyword and the more popular your website, the higher your search rankings will appear. So to be rank the top 20 in a search, there are 3 strategies you can use concurrently.
Strategy 1: Boost your Link Popularity
Search engines measures your website’s popularity based on the number of incoming links to your websites called ‘Link Popularity’. This is to say the more incoming links you have, the higher your link popularity and the higher your chances of getting ranked high. You can use a special tool at linkpopularity.com to monitor the number of incoming links. One thing the note here is that the place that links back to your site must be relevant to your sites. If not, you could mat be penalize by search engines for that.
Strategy 2: Choose and Strategically Place the Best Keywords
Keywords are what search engine look for when ranking your website. The greater the density of the keyword used in your websites, the more likely it will get a higher rank. While you are building your website, you may want to place the most important keywords in your domain name, title tags and throughout your sales copy.
The important keywords that you chose play a critical role in SEO technology because there is a measurable indicator in SEO called KEI indicator, which means “Keywords Effectiveness Index”, represent keywords with a combination of a high number of searches and a low amount of competing websites. KEI simply measure to allow you to quickly identify which keywords will give you the best results.
One of my favorite SEO analyzer by far has to be WordTracker. You can sign up for a free trail of WordTracker, although you are limited to 30 keywords and only 1 search engine in the trial version, it should be more than sufficient for any novice user.
Once you’re logged into Wordtracker I recommend using the “Keyword Universe” to brainstorm for keywords. You just need to type in any keywords related to your area of interest in the left hand panel and then use the thesaurus to find related keywords and synonyms. Wordtracker returns 300 related keywords.
If you click on the keywords that you are interested one at a time you will see a list of searches that include this keyword phrase. Click on any keyword, Wordtracker returns 118 rows of keywords. If you like the look of any keywords you can just add them to my virtual basket and continue choosing keywords until you have about 100s of keywords and proceed on to the third step by clicking on “Competition Analysis”.
At the competition analysis phase you will face with a number of search engines, directories and pay per click engines to choose from. I normally tend to just go for Google, since it represents near 50% of all searches. So, you select your preferred search engine directories and hit the proceed button, then wait for Wordtracker to return the competitive analysis from Google.
The tabulate result display the first 100 keywords from earlier keyword selection. The keywords are displayed in order of KEI, and for each keyword there have the following information:
KEI - this is just a measure to allow you to quickly identify which keywords will give you the best results. Keywords with high KEIs are the best targets as these represent keywords with a combination of a high number of searches and a low amount of competing websites.
Count - This is the number of times that the keyword has appeared in the Wordtracker database
24 Hours - This is the predicted amount of traffic for a single day, for this search engine only (Google in the case of my example)
Competing - This is the number of competing websites for this keyword phrase.
Spend at least a few hours using Wordtracker, brainstorming, choosing keywords and analyzing the results. Remember to save all your good keywords. And once you have your keyword list ensure that add your keywords to your website’s page title, H1 and H2 tags, image ALT tags, keyword meta tags. Also make sure that you include the keywords in the anchor text when you are linking to your site from another site.
Going through this exercise of choosing keywords each time you set up a new website or create a new webpage will ensure that you have the best chance of getting targeted search engine traffic to your site.
Strategy 3: Submit Your Site to All the Search Engines
Once you have optimized your site using keywords and inbound links, your site will get indexed even faster if you submit it to all the possible search engines and directories. You can either submit your site manually by going to the search engine homepage or by using powerful submission software like WebPositionGold.com that will do it automatically for you.
