How to Rank Higher on Search Engines by Getting High Page Rank

It is important for your website to be on good terms with search engines so that you can get organic traffic to your site. And in order to do so, you need to achieve high page rank on your web pages. You are given a high page rank on your pages when search engines find your site valuable, and when you gets the recognition, it shows that you are rank high on search engines, thus given access to free traffic from search engines.

So how does it work? Page rank is transferred through links. The more inbound links you receive from higher page rank sites, the higher your site’s page rank will be. Additionally, page rank does not carry over to all pages on your site. For instance, you could have a PR5 home page, but your other pages might be PR3 or not indexed at all.

Another important concept to keep in mind when setting up external links is that they ‘bleed’ your page rank. This means that linking to too many external sites can actually decrease your own page rank. For this reason, you will want to mitigate the amount of links you put on each page to prevent decreasing your page rank.

In order to receive high page rank, you need to get lots of inbound links pointing to you. Let us look at 3 ways that you can achieve this.

If you have a blog for your website, you will know how sticky and popular it is to get returning visitors. So the first thing you can try is to utilize high rank blogs on the internet to your advantage. Getting links to your site on high page rank blogs is also a good linking strategy. You can do this by making useful, intelligent posts on related blogs, and including your signature with a link pointing to your site. Remember to use your targeted keywords in your anchor text and surrounding text to ensure that your link is given a high relevancy score for your topic.

Viral marketing can also be an excellent tool for getting inbound links. You can do this by sending out surveys, quizzes, and other viral mechanisms, and including a link to your site at the bottom. Every time someone posts the survey, you will get an additional link to your site. This also works for viral videos, which people will have to link to.

Lastly, one of the new and popular ways to get traffic and links to your site is through the use of social bookmarking. Social bookmarking sites, such as Digg, Technorati, and Del.icio.us are high page rank sites that allow bloggers and site owners to submit posts or pages. Not only can this be a good way to increase your natural search engine traffic (by getting a high PR, inbound link), but it can also be a great way to generate more click through traffic.

Just remember that, you need to constantly build links to your site and provide quality content from your site. By achieving a high page rank on your web pages, you are sure to pull in lots of organic traffic from the search engines.

6 Hot Tips on How to Get High Ranking in Google

Once you have your website ready, the next step is to introduce it to the search engines. There is no point having a wonderful website, but people are still not aware of it due to low ranking by search engines. Your website may be listed among the few last pages in a search result with thousands of pages. In order to get high ranks, the keywords are important. The titles, Meta tags and the first paragraph is important as well.

Tips to optimize your websites so that they are visible to search engines are:

Useful contents- to promote your website, the very first thing that you should consider are the contents, you may have a website with good design and has penetrated the top lists in search engine results, but if your contents are bad people will not come back anymore. You may be able to hit the target traffic, but if you are selling products your sales are not going anywhere.

Keyphrases- this is critical because it works to label your website and whenever someone searches using the keyphrases, the search engines will list your website in the results. The keyphrases should not be too common and preferably they are specific to what your website is all about. Usually people will pay more attention to keywords, but it is harder to obtain a high rank with keywords alone. Come up with a number of possible searches and use the best phrase from the list. There are services available on the internet which helps you with choosing keyphrase and keywords, such as WordTracker and KeywordDiscovery.

Titles- the titles for the contents in your website should not only be visible to people but also to the search engines. The rule is to use keyphrases as the titles. The recommended length of a title is between 15 to 20 words.

Meta tags- although one of the biggest search engines does not really pay attention to Meta tags, there are other search engines that still do that. It is still worth the effort to use Meta tags on public pages. Briefly, the Meta tag contains a short description of the webpage.

First paragraph- the first paragraph is important as it includes the description of the contents in a webpage. It contains the elaborated version of the title and Meta tags.

Avoid being classified as spam- there is a long list of don’ts that you should follow to avoid your website from being classified as a spam. An example is to keep the amount of keyphrases to a maximum of 10 in the contents, title and even in the Meta tags. Once a website has been classified as spam, the search engines will not list it.

The above steps are the major players in getting high ranking by the search engines. It is pointless to create a wonderful website with good contents when there is only a small amount of people who knows about it due to low ranking by search engines. Thus, to generate a large traffic to your website, you will have to promote your website to the search engines before anything else.

The Importance of Backlinks To Your Website

Building backlinks, either organically or paid, is extremely important to ensure that your website ranks highly for particular search terms and drives traffic to your website. They are the key factor for successful search engine optimization (SEO), so their importance should never be underestimated.
These (also known as “inbound” links) are links on other websites that point towards your site. They are gained by other webmasters manually adding your website’s link on their website, or can be purchased for a predetermined monthly fee. The cost of a link is based on the website’s popularity, Google PageRank, Alexa rank and various other factors.

The quality of a link must also be taken into consideration. One that is placed on a website that is properly designed, is optimized for search engines and has content relating to your own is considered far superior than a link on an irrelevant and unpopular website.

While it is best to build as many links as possible, it’s important to remember that it is much better to have two quality links than twenty low-quality links. Google (and other major search engines) will penalize your website if it is noticed that there are too many “junk” links, ultimately resulting in your website being pushed down in the search engine ranks. If you are caught to have purchased a number of links, Google will further penalize your website by either completely removing it from their listings or placing you into their “sandbox”.

The safest method to gain organic backlinks is to create quality content for your website. These naturally gained links are usually the highest quality and do wonders for your overall rankings.

Web Page Optimization - 9 Surefire Strategies

How well your site ranks within the search engines depends partly on how each page of your web site is optimized. Since the search engines rank web pages and not websites it’s important to get each page optimized correctly from the start.

Here are 9 strategies that will encourage the search engines to look on your pages favorably and deliver more targeted visitors.

1. Keep your Pages Tightly Focused

A common mistake that most webmasters make is to combine unrelated products on a single page. We often see this practice on home pages in particular.

Use your home page should be an introduction to the rest of your website. Don’t load it up with several different ideas, this confuses visitors. Instead use your home page to accurately describe what your site is about and what visitors can expect to find. Allow your visitors to use your navigation bar as a way for them to find exactly what they are looking for. Hint: Good organization within your navigation is important.

2. Keyword Research

Do your keyword research! Use a keyword tool that will help you find precisely the keywords that people use to find your web pages. A good keyword research tool will tell you exactly what keywords surfers are using to find your information and products.

Strive to find descriptive keyword phrases or long tail keywords as opposed to single words. This will bring you more targeted visitors, the ones that are the most likely to buy.

3. Optimize your Title and Description Tags

Your title tag should accurately describe your page’s topic. It should also contain your best keyword phrase for that specific page.

Your page description should also contain your title’s main keyword phrase; however expand the description to include a concise and comprehensive summary of what the page is actually about. Keep in mind that some search engines use your description when listing your page. Since this is most likely what viewers will be reading to decide if your page is what they are looking for, make sure it is not only accurate but compelling so as to encourage a click.

4. Each Web Page Must have Relevant, Unique, Useful Content

Because search engines are committed to bringing their viewers the most relevant and unique pages, it’s in your best interest to create content that is original and useful. Use your creative verbal skills to generate a voice that is uniquely you but also offers information that is interesting and worthwhile.

Try telling stories, portraying experiences, interjecting personal commentary and offering your own individual suggestions. This all goes a long way in helping create the kind of content that generates traffic.

5. Make good use of Headers, Sub Headers and Headline Tags

Place headers on your pages and then use sub-headers below that. Your header should also contain your main keyword phrase and your sub-header should expand on that phrase.

Also when using headers be sure to use header (H1, H2 or H3) Tags. A headline tag is formatted in this way:

Headline (with the number in the tags (h1, h2, h3, h4) corresponding with size of the font)

6. Use synonyms and Word Forms Many search engines are now using ‘Latent Semantic Indexing’ (LSI), which is a technique used in determining the efficiency, accuracy and relevancy of a web page. Because of this it is wise to use as many synonyms and word forms of your main keyword phrases as possible.

For example, synonyms for the word ’soft’ might be ‘downy’, ‘cottony’ ‘fluffy’ or ‘mushy’.

Word forms for the word ’soft’ would be softly, soften, softness, softer.

7. Use Your Keyword Phrase in your Page Name

When creating a page on your website, title it with your page’s main keywords. This will give the viewer and the search engines a good idea of what the page is about. A web page about ’scented candles’ would most accurately be called:

yoursite.com/scented-candles.html

8. Use ALT tags for your graphics

Use your main keyword phrase in your graphics alt tag. Search engines can’t read graphics so using an alt tag gives them one more piece of information on how relevant your page is.

Don’t abuse this strategy by using a lot of graphics and stuffing them with several keyword phrases, the search engines won’t tolerate that; however one or two graphics with your main keyword phrase in the alt text will be appropriate.

9. Get Quality Incoming Links to Your Site

Your links appearing on high quality web sites is what effectively weaves you into the World Wide Web. However this strategy is far more effective when your links are placed on high ranking, relevant web sites.

Start by accurately linking to your web pages within your own site. Your most important links should be on all your pages.

Next, encourage relevant sites to link to your site. The ‘reciprocal link exchange’ method has been popular in past years, however this method has lost its ability to provide much benefit. Instead adopt more reliable methods such as:

- Posting or exchanging articles that contain a resource box with your best keyword phrases - Submitting your site to relevant directories - Publishing press release - Participating in discussion forums

- Offer product testimonials

Using the above webpage optimization strategies will no doubt bring you an increase in traffic for your chosen keywords. Best of luck with your optimization efforts — the results will be very rewarding!

Effective Search Engine Optimization Tips

I have no doubt that the majority of people who have taken the time to read this article are aware of the difficulties and complexities of trying to go about effective search engine optimization for their websites. Due to the ever increasing competition of websites in the popular niches it has now become more important than ever to make sure you are 5 steps ahead of your competitors to reap the rankings you believe your websites deserve. Lets take a look below at some helpful link building tips to help you with your website optimization

Link Building and Advertising Techniques:

1. Directory submissions: This is probably the most effective and known method of achieving a high quantity of backlinks to your website. By submitting your website to search engine friendly directories and related categories can increase the ranking of their website over time. It is very important to alternate up to 3 different titles and descriptions when submitting of your website to directories for SEO reasons. It may take a long time for submissions to be accepted but this method of gaining backlinks is essential.

2. Forum and Blog Posting: These two ways of building up backlinks can also be effective but most people just end up spamming other blogs and forums for the main aim of trying to obtain immediate traffic and sales. Having said this, don’t bother submitting poor affiliate based websites in your posts as the chances are high that you will get banned. However if you have a blog that advertises a link to a product or service then it will most likely be okay, and in that case can largely help the ranking of your website after time provided the post is on a forum related to your niche.

3. Submission To Article Directories: Going about writing quality articles with niche related content and submitting them to top ranked article directories can help you receive good amounts of web traffic and also help build quality backlinks. Be sure to include a backlink to your website in the resource box using anchor text for a good keyword in your niche. You may even discover that if related websites in your niche find your article, they will probably put a link to it on their website which will give you more exposure and traffic.

4. Link Exchanges: Exchanging links with websites in your niche is also an essential technique which will once again get you very high quality backlinks, which can sometimes be more effective than doing a couple of hundred submissions to directories. Take a look around at the many SEO forums which have link exchange rooms and post a message about the type of website you wish to exchange links with. There is always someone willing to exchange links.

5. Pay Per Click:For those of you who have commercial websites or any websites for that matter, using pay per click programs like adwords can provide immediate targeted traffic to your website. You just need to work out a good budget and make sure you don’t waste too much money as one can get addicted to this easy traffic method.

Are You Confused About Pagerank? You Are Not Alone

People are very confused about Pagerank. At one end of the scale there are those who believe it’s worthless, at the other there are those who believe it’s of significant value. So who’s right?

First off let’s look at how you secure Pagerank. When someone links to a page on your site it’s considered to be a vote for it, a thumbs up. It’s one of the key metrics Google’s systems use to decide the importance of a page. ONE of the key metrics. If many other pages link to your page they are giving Google a signal that your page is important. If the pages linking to your page also have links to them and they are considered to be important pages, their link to you is given even more value. This is why some people suggest it’s not worth getting a link from a page unless the page you want the link from has itself got a decent pagerank - this is misguided.

With me so far?

The history behind this relates to the Google boys, Sergey Brin and Larry Page, being academics. In academia peer reviewed papers are the common currency of ’status’. If you write a paper and your peers review and applaud it you are off to a good start. If your paper is then referenced by other people’s papers it’s stature and kudos goes up further, as does yours as the author.

So, suggesting Pagerank is worthless is actually untrue, it may not generate a ton of lucrative traffic, but it does have a value.

So why is it not the be all and end all of a web page? Simple, relevancy.

Google needs to deliver relevant results to people searching. If they don’t people will go elsewhere for their search needs. It doesn’t simply look for the page with the highest Pagerank to put at number one, it looks for a page that is most relevant. This is why a Pagerank 3 page can be at number 1 with a Pagerank 6 being at number 10.

How Google decides on relevancy is complex and they don’t share the formula with the outside world! The stuff we know is used includes various on page ‘tags’ such as Title, H1 etc, and the relevancy of links.

So, an example - Suppose you have a page on your site and it has 100 links to it. These links are from pages that themselves have links and as such a decent Pagerank. These links give your page a Pagerank of say 4. However, although the pages linking to your page have a good Pagerank they are not exactly relevant to your page. That is to say your page could be about ships but the pages linking to you are about birds, mountains and needlework. These links are giving your page a good Pagerank but they are not relevant to your page.

So along comes a person searching and they type ’ships’ into Google. Your page, with its Pagerank of 4 is at number 8 but the page at number one only has a Pagerank of three! How come?

The page at number one most likely doesn’t have as many links as you, or at least as many quality links - links from pages that themselves have links. However, the links the page at number one does have are all from sites about ships. So, other pages about ships are linking to this page which is about ships. That’s (probably) why it’s beating your Pagerank 4 page even though it’s only Pagerank 3, and that’s why people think Pagerank has no value. “How can Pagerank have any value if a page with Pagerank 3 beats a page with Pagerank 6?”. You now understand why, relevancy.

What this all means is simple. If you have a high Pagerank because you’ve been busy securing lots of irrelevant links you are not going to see much benefit from it. If however you have a high Pagerank from securing highly relevant links you will see a benefit from it. This is why sometimes the number one page is a high Pagerank and sometimes it isn’t.

Getting a good rank in Google for a competitive phrase is hard work. In this context you shouldn’t concern yourself with pagerank. If however you can secure high quality relevant links to your page you will see your pagerank AND traffic increase.

Increase Your Content and Quality - Increase the Traffic

Back in the 1950s up until the1990s, people put all their trust on broadcast media because it released the most accurate, most relevant news and information. Today, they have put almost all their faith into online media. Almost, because readers are able to determine which individual wrote and published which content first. And quality matters of course. Any online business must excel in and package the quality copywriting, research and link building if it wants to gain the trust and readership of its visitors.

First-time website visitors are attracted by a short, snappy and clear writing style, which first proved popular in the broadcast media. They are influenced by content that has a flawless flow without any grammatical errors and punctuation problems. They are convinced of the website’s reliability if its content always appears on search engine results. These are why SEO copywriting, or the act of writing content for websites, can either invite more visitors or shut your website down.

SEO copywriting becomes great when it is realistic and true to life. The online articles which are passed around through email, weblogs and internet-based communities come from writers who record their personal or professional experiences, in whole or in part, both on and away from the internet. A website gains more visitors if any of its articles touch a person deeply enough for him or her to write or debate about it, or simply share the link with someone else.

But research is what separates exceptional from great SEO content. The internet now houses just about every single bit and piece of information, many of which originally came from print media. The act of conducting research is an excellent SEO service in itself, because website readers will follow SEO companies which know a lot about certain topics and keywords. SEO packages shouldn’t rely on copywriting services alone.

Moreover, website followers believe that well-researched, well-written articles are those which have additional content. If in the past only teachers could check if an article was plagiarized, anyone familiar with running online searches can now easily track which content was copied in whole or in. The depth of the words, the starts and stops of sentences, and the flow of thought in a piece can even reveal who actually wrote it.

But copywriting and research are not enough. The use of link building can further improve the content and quality of a website, and also increase the number of its visitors. Websites should literally link, and not disassociate, themselves with others which share their niche and interests. It works in the same way that a person relates with others who like almost the same things that he or she does.

Of course successful link building thrives on similarity and support, not absolute resemblance. Two parties that keep writing identical topics in a consistent, uniform manner will only end up competing against each other. Furthermore, people would rather choose an SEO company or copywriting company that seems to present (and price) the same SEO services differently versus other companies which present the same SEO packages together.

An expert company must offer SEO services that aim to attract more readers and more reactions. These audience-oriented campaigns have already worked for the print and broadcast media, and they can do the same for search engine-dependent media today.

LearningCommunties as the Foundation of a Cooperative Commonwealth (2003)

The heart of the continuing project to promote non school learning is the Internet. The Coalition’s own web page is only a piece of the growing interest in using the Internet for learning. Brain research has shown that learning is not only different for each individual but also it is a continual non-linear process. That is, that we do not learn and store one set of facts or a discipline in one part of the brain. But that new knowledge if being taken in all the time and being harmonized within the existing single holistic neural network of each person’s brain. This individualized non-linear learning cannot be efficiently forced on a group of students at the same time in the same place by the same technique. Learning is a unique experience for each person.

The Internet provides a radically different mode of learning. One can transfer quickly among areas of knowledge as needed and desired by the individual. To emphasize non-linear learning the Coalition’s web page is designed as a mandala. That is, its cover page presents a number of options for the reader, not a linear index. A reader may start with the philosophy, practical examples, resources, general discussion, or other entry points. Internal links will lead the reader to other areas inside the Coalition’s web site or to other websites without a break in continuity. Claudia L’Amoreux and Ib Bang are coordinating the efforts to make the web site a model of what the Internet may become in providing learning experiences.

^
Communal Learning

But we recognize that the Internet can not be a substitute for parents, family, friends, teachers, community or other means of learning and of social intercourse. So a strong emphasis of the web site is on collaborative learning and the development of local learning communities. A special section is devoted to “New Chapters” that provide how to guidance to self-learners and their families. Subsections will be on How to form local communities, How to organize cooperatives, How to become a Self-Learner, Social Transformation, Learning Libraries, and other topics required for collaborative learning programs. Merrill Tew, a PhD student in education, and Laddie Lushin, a lawyer with 25 years experience with food cooperatives have provided “New Chapters” and are leading the development of these concepts.

^
From Teachers to Mentors

Equally important, we feel, is the role of mentors, learning coaches, counselors, and learning guides. “Morphing ’school teachers’ into ‘community mentors’” is a topic of particular interest we are discussing on the listserv We plan to develop “New Chapters” on the future learning profession for the web site. As the efficiency of self-learning or child-centered-learning becomes better recognized a new profession for teachers may emerge. Mentors will be called on to help individuals of all ages to plan their own learning programs. This will require not only a professional understanding of how an individual learns, but also an understanding of how to provide learning opportunities within the community. Libraries and museums will play an increasingly important role in future learning. But so will factories, farms, businesses, the streets, and nature.

The future community learning professionals cannot remain isolated in schools any more than the future citizens can be so isolated. As learning become more lifelong and centered in the individual and experienced in the community the learning professionals will have an increasingly important role to play in the life of the community. Libraries may be a better model for future learning centers than are today’s schools. Member, Charles Willets, editor of Counterpoise, is facilitating cooperation between this Coalition and progressive librarians.

^
Cultural Transition

Community, not education, is the central interest of many members of this Coalition. We see the global and local social problems facing humanity as inherent in the social structure, and in the educational system that forms the citizen of the future. The diminishing concern for family values and community solidarity leaves citizens old and young with no sense of belonging. “Belonging” is a most, if not the most, fundamental need of humans. If healthy outlets for this need are not provided by the family, neighborhood, and community, individuals will satisfy that need by joining cults, gangs, secret societies and other forms of antisocial organizations. Violence, such as that at Columbine, as well as the general alienation of youth is a clear indication that schools do not meet that social need.

Many members of ‘A Coalition for Self-Learning’ see the strengthening of communities as the the Coalition’s purpose for being. One of our core members, Bill Wetzel, on graduation from high school two years ago took a year off to bike the country visiting other schools to talk to other young people. He found that like himself youth was generally bored and alienated by schools. He has now organized “Power to Youth” to help highschool students and others young people to organize and to take control of their own learning.

Another member of the Coalition, Rick Smyre, consultant and President of CCOF (Center of Communities of the Future) recognizes the crucial impact that the education system has in community development. His programs to develop the capacity of local citizens to prepare for the future emphasizes the need to involve young people throughout their lives in community activities and community governance.

The sense of community and belonging is also the topic by Michael Cohen in his “New Chapter” in the online book, “Educating and Counseling with Nature: A Natural Systems Thinking Process produces ecopsychology courses and degrees that enable students to increase academic skills, resiliency and responsible relationships.” Cohen has been leading non-school wilderness learning sessions for a number of decades. His Natural Systems Thinking Process is based on developing a practical understanding of the critical place cooperation has in nature. Nothing can exist without a extensive system of others to maintian it. Communities are a crucial part of the life support systems required by humanity.

This same theme is echoed by the theoretical studies of Kathia and Alexander Laszlo in the field of The Theory of General Evolution. Their Evolutionary Learning Centers (ELCs) are based on ideas similar of Paulo Friere’s that learning should be a preparation and participation in the continuality of change. The new theories of chaos, complexity and gaia show the interconnectedness of all life. They imply that learning communities must become the basis for a sustainable future. Kathia and Alexander are now leading a task force to coordinate an internet conference, with other leaders of community development, on the internet and plan for a broader future international conference on creating learning communities.

^
Collaborative Homeschooling

The proof that schools are unnecessary is perhaps best witnessed by the success of homeschooling. Average SAT scores, the success of homeschoolers in the best of our universities, the long history of leaders like Margaret Mead, Albert Einstein, Abraham Lincoln and other self-learners, as well as the learning systems of many other cultures is proof being touted in a growing number of publications. Many homeschool advocates including Ann Lahrson Fisher, Patrick Farenga, Jerry Mintz, Katharine Houk, Linda Dobson, Mary Leue, and others are active participants in the Coalition. Long before the Coalition formed they were recognizing the emergence of “homeschool support groups” and other forms of collaborative learning.

The concern that the abandonment of schools by homeschoolers will be a detriment to public education is a legitimate concern of many educators. Others critics have suggested that homeschooling is an element of the “bowling alone” trend of individuals abandoning community in their own individual self-interest. Some see the charter school movement as a solution to providing more popular input and flexibility to the current educational system.

All of these concerns and happenings are being taken into account in the Coalition’s programs. We recognize that not all parents are capable, willing or want to homeschool. We see homeschooling as a most successful experiment on the way toward a more open, progressive, flexible. life long learning system. Our experiments aim at using the best of these practices, and overcoming the worst of the faults of the current system. Our goal is to move beyond schooling and beyond homeschooling to a learning system and a society that values the individual, the community, society, and nature in new ways.

The Art of Neon Lights - An Illuminating Marketing Concept

A new and electrifying promotional phenomenon arrived in the early 1920’s that took traditional methods of marketing to another level. In 1923, Georges Claude and his French company Claude Neon, introduced neon gas signs to the United States. It was in this same year that the first neon sign was installed in the city of Los Angeles, California. A Packard car dealer, Earle C. Anthony, imported from Paris, two “Packard” signs for his dealership which he paid $24,000 for. Of course this was an incredible amount of money to pay during that time for two signs, but the concept was new and unique although the popularity of neon signs was not widespread yet. Today, this vintage Packard sign is located on a privately owned structure in Cottage Grove, Oregon, but can be viewed from the sidewalk.

Glass benders infuse a variety of gases (ie. neon, helium, xenon, argon and krypton) to produce a diversity of colors. When you look at the dazzling show of neon lights that shine brightly on Broadway in New York and along the Strip or on Fremont Street in Las Vegas, Nevada, they are as spectacular as a fireworks show on New Year’s Eve or the Fourth of July. Traveling across the country and around the world, you will find a variety of businesses still displaying the incredible craftsmanship of neon lights.

Neon lights on theatre marquees, signs for motels, hotels, restaurants, casinos, and other businesses added that “wow factor” for attracting potential clients and curious onlookers. These lights on the outside of businesses were an exciting hook to lure you into finding out what was happening on the inside of that establishment. Neon lights were quite an innovative promotional marketing tool.

From advertising to art, the popularity of neon lights, neon clocks, neon specialty and novelty signs, business signs, bar signs, beer signs and light boxes segue into eye-catching collectibles. If you are a neon light enthusiast wanting to learn more about the education, history and preservation of neon collectibles, here are some resources:

1. MONA (The Museum of Neon Art) educates the public about the history, culture, and technical aspects of electric and kinetic media. MONA provides neon art classes and is dedicated to the education, exhibition and preservation of electric and kinetic media art.

2. The Neon Museum in Las Vegas collects, preserves, studies and exhibits neon signs for the enrichment and education of their global audiences.

3. Roadside Peek includes content on its website regarding education and citings of neon lights. They also include other roadside icons and treasures from the past found across the country.

For institutional locations regarding continued education on neon signs, here is a list of some schools provided by the Neon University:

1. British School of Neon (England)

2. Daco Neon School (Papillon, NE)

The Canadian Dilemma - Doctors Who Flip Hamburgers

A few years ago I got into a conversation with cab driver in Toronto. I was surprised to learn that the driver, an immigrant from India, had been unable to find work in his profession during his five years in Canada. His qualifications from universities in both the UK and India, included a Ph.D. All of his qualifications were recognized in Canada. The problem he ran into was a lack of Canadian job experience. Despite being interviewed over twenty times for a position he was repeatedly given the thumbs down. This anecdote along with similar stories I have come across in the media, are fairly commonplace these days.

Immigrants arrive in Canada buoyed with high hopes, intent of giving of their best. How come then so many qualified immigrants end up in low end jobs, some even on the unemployment rolls? How come a high percentage end up leaving, returning home or moving to another immigrant destination?

There is a critical doctor shortage in Canada, something health professionals and administrators have long been complaining about. There are good sized communities in Canada without a doctor. In some cities the doctor shortage has compelled patients to resort to emergency departments or clinics in order to find help. One study predicts that come 2011, Canada may be short as many as 6,000 doctors. The shortfall isn’t only related to GP’s but also to specialists in areas such as obstetrics, radiology and anesthesiology. It’s an acute and growing problem.

Red tape and entrenched regulations are part of the challenge faced by immigrant doctors. Canadian Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons require all graduating doctors to complete a residency of two years or more. While many immigrant doctors are fully qualified, their residency stints in their homelands don’t count since only Canadian and American residencies are accepted. So you have situations where highly qualified individuals are compelled to work in a fast food joint or clean floors, because they find it next to impossible to get a residency.

Foreign trained doctors are quite literally caught on the horns of a dilemma. In order to be eligible for residency they have to have at least a year of medical practice behind them … but in order to practice in Canada they have to have residency. It is in fact a classic Catch-22
scenario.

It’s surprising this problem has been allowed to get to this point. Quite aside from the importance of doing the right thing by new immigrants, there are also economic benefits to Canada that would accrue with more active recruitment of immigrant doctors. It would save provincial taxpayers a whack of cash since they wouldn’t be paying toward the cost of educating as many medical professionals. Concerns about maintaining standards are important, but the assumption that foreign standards don’t match up is overblown, especially given the advances in clinical care with the greater availability of medical technology.

The whole process needs to be fast-tracked. Most importantly, the residency hurdle needs to be quickly addressed by recognizing foreign residencies (other than American) that meet provincial standards, so that these valuable individuals aren’t left to languish in the wings.

Qualified immigrants in the US seem to fare better when it comes to finding work in their field. The American “melting pot” approach is a great equalizer in certain respects. There has been the suggestion that Canadian employers who cite “lack of experience” or other in-house regulations as reasons for turning down immigrant applicants are in effect practicing cloaked discrimination, and even racism. There are also claims that some professional sectors have for want of a better term a sort of ‘old boys’ club’ mentality and exercise a form of protectionism when it comes to hiring protocols. If this is in fact going on in some cases, all the more reason for the government to act in order to ensure that red tape isn’t being used as an artificial barrier to discriminate against immigrant applicants on the basis of their race or cultural heritage.

In this era of international trade, both Canada and the US have reciprocal trading relationships with other nations. The outsourcing of operations to countries in Asia is an example of this. When you consider this new economic relationship together with the high sounding words of praise the Canadian government routinely lavishes on new immigrants and the skills they offer, it is becoming increasingly unacceptable that these employment anomalies are being swept under the rug. At least the Tories have undertaken a $3 million dollar study to try and get to the roots of the problem. Let’s hope it results in some real action.

The Canada I know is about fair play and decency, and that ethic should be extended to all Canadian job seekers irrespective of origin.
